FAA Part 107 Certification Guide for New Drone Pilots

Part 107 Overview

FAA Part 107 governs commercial drone operations in the United States. Anyone flying drones for business purposes must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate. This certification requires passing a knowledge test covering airspace, weather, and regulations.

Who Needs Part 107

Commercial operations include any flight for business compensation. Real estate photography, inspections, and surveying all require certification. Hobbyists flying recreationally under different rules don’t need Part 107.

Test Requirements

The knowledge test covers 60 multiple-choice questions. Topics include airspace classification, weather effects, drone performance, and emergency procedures. A 70% score passes the test. Testing centers operate nationwide.

Certification Process

After passing, apply through IACRA for your certificate. Background checks process within a few weeks. Certificates remain valid for two years. Recurrent testing or training maintains certification.
